Shopify AI search optimization
Shoppers increasingly start with an AI assistant instead of Google. When someone asks ChatGPT "what's the best X for Y", a few stores get named and linked — and the rest are invisible. Here's a practical, Shopify-specific playbook for becoming one of the named stores.
It's AEO, not SEO
Traditional SEO gets you ranked as a blue link. AI search works differently: the engine reads multiple sources and hands the buyer one synthesized answer with a handful of cited stores. Your goal isn't to rank #1 — it's to be one of the 3–6 brands the model names. That practice is called Answer Engine Optimization (AEO), or Generative Engine Optimization (GEO).
You can't buy your way in with ads, and keywords alone don't decide it. AI engines cite the stores whose product data is the most complete, structured and trustworthy.
Product data quality is the unlock
The stores that show up consistently across AI platforms are the ones with accurate, complete, machine-readable product data. That means real product titles, descriptions over ~100 words, filled-in meta descriptions, image alt text, vendor and product-type fields, and correct categorization against Shopify's taxonomy.
Thin or duplicated descriptions, missing alt text, and empty attributes are the gaps that quietly keep your products out of AI answers. Auditing and fixing them in bulk is the highest-leverage thing most merchants can do.
Structured data and llms.txt
Shopify gives you Product schema, fast loading, and a mobile-first storefront out of the box — all helpful signals. Layer on AggregateRating and FAQ schema where relevant so AI engines can quote your ratings and answers directly.
An llms.txt file at your domain root gives AI crawlers a clean, curated map of what your store sells. Guidance is still evolving — it isn't a magic ranking file — but it's a low-cost, machine-readable summary of your catalog that costs nothing to maintain when it's auto-generated.
Use a real custom domain
AI engines cite your store by its canonical URL. If you're still on your-store.myshopify.com, citations are technically possible but rare. Connecting a custom domain is one of the single biggest unlocks — do it before anything else.
Measure which engines name you
Without measurement you're guessing. Track which engines mention your store, for which buyer prompts, and how it moves after each fix. A visibility scan turns a vague worry into a number you can actually improve week over week.
Frequently asked
Do I need a separate app to optimize for AI search?
Not strictly, but the work — auditing product data, generating an llms.txt, adding schema, and tracking AI mentions — is tedious to do by hand across hundreds of products. FoundGPT automates the audit and fixes, and tracks which AI engines mention you.
How long until AI picks up my changes?
Usually 2–4 weeks, since engines re-crawl on their own schedule. Make your fixes, then re-check weekly to watch the trend rather than expecting an overnight jump.
Is this different from Shopify's built-in SEO settings?
Yes. Shopify's SEO fields target Google rankings. AI search optimization targets being cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, which depends more on structured, complete, citation-worthy product data than on keywords.
