How to Connect Your Shopify Store to ChatGPT (So Your Products Show Up)

There's no single 'connect to ChatGPT' button — and that's the source of most of the confusion. Your products reach ChatGPT through two separate lanes that do different jobs. Here's what each one is, what it requires, and which to set up first.

There's no single "connect to ChatGPT" button — and that's the source of most of the confusion. Your products reach ChatGPT through two separate lanes that do different jobs. Here's what each one is, what it requires, and which to set up first.

"I have a Shopify store — is there a way to connect it to ChatGPT so people can find my products?" It's one of the most common questions merchants ask us, and the honest answer is: yes, but not the way the question assumes. There's no toggle in your Shopify admin and no form where you "submit a product to ChatGPT." Instead, your products reach ChatGPT through two distinct lanes, and almost all the confusion comes from treating them as one.

Lane 1: Get found organically (the search lane)

When someone asks ChatGPT "what's a good [your category] for [need]," ChatGPT answers partly by reading the open web — product pages, buying guides, comparisons, reviews — through its search crawler, OAI-SearchBot. If your store is crawlable and your product data is clean, you can be surfaced and linked here with no feed at all.

What this lane needs:

  • Don't block the crawlers. If your robots.txt blocks OpenAI's search crawler, you've opted out of this entirely. (Which OpenAI bots to allow, and why.)
  • Clean, structured product data — the title, price, availability, images and schema ChatGPT needs to understand and trust what you sell.
  • Content that answers the questions shoppers actually ask — this is what gets you named in the first place, before anything fetches your product details.

This lane is slower and harder to measure, but it's where you get chosen. (Why that still matters even though most measurable orders arrive via the feed.)

Lane 2: Put your catalog on ChatGPT's shopping surface (the feed lane)

The second lane is direct: you send OpenAI a product feed so your catalog is available on ChatGPT's shopping surface, where a shopper already in buying mode can see and transact with your products. This is the lane that produces the most countable orders today.

What this lane needs:

  • Access to OpenAI Ads Manager, where product feeds and their delivery credentials live. This is the real gate, and it's separate from your regular OpenAI account. (The full prerequisites, in order.)
  • A compliant feed, delivered on a schedule — with the seller and product fields filled in correctly. A feed whose store URL doesn't resolve, or whose IDs are in the wrong format, delivers "successfully" and still ingests nothing. (The seller-field trap that breaks feeds silently.)

Which to set up first

  • If you want results this month, start with the feed — it's the shortest path to orders you can actually attribute, and right now most stores haven't connected one, so it's still a genuine edge.
  • But don't skip Lane 1, because the feed only makes you fetchable — it has no influence on whether ChatGPT names you when a shopper asks for a recommendation. A store that's only on the feed is purchasable but un-recommended; a store that's only crawlable is recommended but harder to buy from on the shopping surface. You want both.

The thirty-second starting point

Before you build anything, find out where you stand:

Then pick a lane and start. "Connecting to ChatGPT" isn't one switch — it's these two jobs, done deliberately.
